In short: The Bambu Lab A1 is a full-size (256 mm) 3D printer built for beginners. It calibrates itself, prints PLA and PETG well with ready-made profiles, and can be upgraded to 4-colour printing. Its limits are an open frame (no ABS/ASA) and the extra desk space a moving bed needs. Below are its specifications, what each feature means in practice, and who should buy it.

Specifications from the official Bambu Lab A1 spec sheet.
Key features explained
- Automatic calibration: the printer levels the bed and tunes itself before printing, so beginners can skip manual bed levelling.
- Fast motion: up to 500 mm/s and 10,000 mm/s² acceleration, so everyday PLA prints finish much faster than on older budget printers.
- Safety and reliability sensors: filament run-out, tangle detection and power-loss recovery help long prints survive problems.
- Camera: a built-in camera lets you check prints from your phone and record timelapses.
- Quick-swap nozzles: a 0.4 mm nozzle is included, with 0.2, 0.6 and 0.8 mm options for finer detail or faster, stronger prints.
Multi-colour printing with the AMS lite (A1 Combo)
The A1 Combo adds the AMS lite, which holds four spools and switches between them automatically. That lets one print use up to four colours or materials, which is ideal for logos, name plates, signage and toys. Each colour change purges a little filament, so prints with many changes use more material and take longer.
Who is the Bambu Lab A1 for?
- Beginners who want reliable prints without tuning
- Students and hobbyists printing parts up to 25 cm
- Makers and small sellers who want colourful prints with the Combo
Look elsewhere if you need to print ABS, ASA or carbon-fibre filaments (choose an enclosed printer), or if you only print small parts and want to spend less (the A1 mini).
Pros
- Automatic calibration makes first prints reliable for beginners
- Full 256 mm build volume at an entry-level price
- Run-out, tangle and power-loss recovery built in
- Camera monitoring and timelapse
- Upgrade path to 4-colour printing with the AMS lite
Cons
- Open frame: not suitable for ABS, ASA or other high-temperature engineering filaments
- Bed moves front-to-back, so it needs clearance behind and in front of the printer
- Some features work best with a Bambu Lab account and internet connection
- AMS colour changes create purge waste
